Aim of the event:
  • Raise Awareness
  • Make ESN Accessible
Goal of the event:
Building capacities of students without disabilities in order for them to help their fellow students with disabilities. Pointing out the importance of Braille alphabet knowledge among students in order for them to understand blind people. Promotion of the Braille alphabet among people without disabilities and raising awareness about the problems of people with visual impairment.
Short description of the event:
We organised Braille alphabet workshops in order to provide the basic knowledge of communication in Braille for students without disabilities and build their capacities to better understand and help students with visual impairment. We had two days of workshops and each day lasted for 5 hours, first part was the short introduction to Braille alphabet and a bit of theory about it the way alphabet developed who created it and with which idea, how do you print books on Braille printers and all the usage of Braille alphabet today. Participants had the opportunity to see and try to read books written in Braille letters and then we had practical session where the lecturer explained them how to use Braille alphabet working sheet in order to write down some inspirational quotes, one of them was:"When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it." After they wrote down the quote on the Braille letter practice paper then they switched with a fellow participants in order for them to check on each others work and learn from it. All of that has provided the participants with the basic skills of Braille alphabet.
How did your event go?:
I think it went well, but the amount of people interested in this workshop was lower than for the sign language workshops maybe because Braille alphabet is less used and it seemed more formal to participants than sign language.
